2001-11-30 来源:文汇报 通过对话让人类“软着陆”――杜维明与罗伯特・贝拉关于“轴心文明”的对话。并不是说现代性把一切传统都抛掉了。过速的现代化带来很多问题,不是一个国家能够解决的,只有携起 手来,只有相互理解不同体制和相似点,我们才能够应对现代性的挑战,不仅仅是未来二三 十年的挑战,还有更长远的挑战。 宗教式追求能理解世界的普遍规律 杜维明:罗伯特・贝拉教授是著名社会学家和理论家。宗教问题在这次对话中会占很重要的比例。什么是宗教?我想请他和我们分享一下他的相关观点。 罗伯特・贝拉:宗教这个词在欧洲有几千年历史,但是在日本和中国,宗教只有几个世 纪历史。佛教在日本有很高的地位,但是日本人认为神道不是宗教。对很多日本人来说,宗 教是指基督教或者佛教。如果问日本人他们的宗教是什么,他们会说他们没有,而实际上他 们有祭拜祖先和死者的活动。 杜维明:伟大的人类学家格尔茨说:“宗教是一种具有符号社会系统,被人类实施后, 能产生强烈的、有说服力的、持久的情感和动力,其意义存在于生存的普遍规律中。”这句 话最重要的部分是追求生存的普遍规律。这也是爱因斯坦终身关心的问题。在我们讨论到宇 宙是否有意义这个问题时,爱因斯坦认为,我们能够理解宇宙,但是我们为什么能够理解, 这个问题同样重要。因此,如果你们了解世界上最伟大、最有影响力的科学家的生活和著作 时,会发现其实他们致力于宗教式的追求,试图去理解这个具有普遍性规律的世界。

内容提要 本文以访谈形式阐述了杜维明教授对刘宗周人谱的学术见解: 1. 人谱的理论背景是对人的存在和存在条件的理解; 2. 其视天下安危为安危是一种 道德史观、鉴戒式的历史思维, 对清代史学有深刻影响; 3. 其以体验和体知、 由独体的 超越内在的性格展现了道德精神现象的世界。 关键词: 刘宗周人谱 人的存在 道德精神现象 作者东方朔, 复旦大学哲学系副教授。

【文章】《哲学动态》2000年5月,杜维明:儒家人文精神的宗教涵义
文章来源:《哲学动态》2000.05 关于儒家人文精神的宗教涵义,杜维明先生以《论语》为底本,通过自己的切身感 受,以及与西方文明的比较来给出了自己心中的答案,此为杜维明先生为其《论儒学的宗 教性》的中文版写的序言。 (一) 《论语》的“先进”篇有:“季路问事鬼神。子曰:‘未能事人,焉能事鬼?’‘敢问死?’曰: ‘未知生,焉知死?’”这段话常被近代学者所引用而且判定为孔子坚持事人而不事鬼,知生而 不知死的铁证。既然儒家的“创始者”突出人事和生命世界而忽视鬼神与死亡论域,儒家价 值的基本取向便是入世的人生哲学而绝非宗教信仰。 把儒家规定为人生哲学(引申为社会伦理)而非宗教信仰在文化中国的学术界早已形成 共识。提倡充分现代化的胡适,坚守唯物主义原则的张岱年和信仰自由主义的殷海光大概 都接受儒家不是宗教的观点。其实,大陆、港台、东南亚和欧美的汉学家泰半认为把儒家 当作宗教不仅违背事实,而且会降低儒家传统的价值。 严格地说,现代化即有世俗化(“消解魔咒”)的涵义;不论社会主义所揭橥的唯物论或资 本主义所弘扬的自由思潮都有反宗教的一面。这点和塑造西方现代精神的“启蒙心 态”(Enlightenment mentality)有密切的关系。让我举几个简单的例子来说明现代西方反宗 教(特别是基督教)的人文背景
