2010年,《文化纵横》,杜维明:多元现代性中的儒家传统
文章来源:《文化纵横》2010 年第 2 期 20 年来,我一直在考虑这样一个问题:中国的传统文化特别是儒家文化是否能够超越 政治化的限制、去除糟粕,走上现代化的道路,对西方的启蒙作出回应,并与西方的现代 价值相匹配?张灏曾指出,现代化是对传统的严厉批判,他提出要从传统的价值角度来反 思现代化。我的想法就是从儒家的立场来反思西方的启蒙心态。关于启蒙,西方很多学者 将之作为一场运动,哈贝马斯则认为它是一个还未完成的计划。在这里,我们既不把它当 作还在发展的一个计划,也不把它当作一种运动,而是看作一种心态。这种启蒙心态不仅 影响了社会主义和资本主义,它还孕育了市场经济、民主政治和市民社会。此外,包括跨 国公司、民间或官方组织,都与启蒙有着十分密切的关系。舒衡哲和李泽厚指出,救亡压 倒了启蒙,对此我基本接受。但我认为,更重要的是启蒙被大多数甚至是全部知识分子认 为是能够使中国现代化的唯一道路。那么,我们能否从儒家人文精神的角度对启蒙做一同 情的了解和批判的认同,我们是否能够通过儒家的核心价值,对启蒙所代表的核心价值做 一些反思呢? 在这中间就出现了这样一个预设:一个中西方间可以进行平等互惠对话的时代也许已 经到来。之前的对话是不公平的,实际上,现在的对话条件也是不公平的,因为我们的力 量太薄弱,特别是在文化领域。西方提出了“软实力”的说法,我们也用软实力,但是我认 为这是值得商榷的。这个概念是约瑟夫·奈提出的,他认为仅衡量政治、经济和军事力量还 不够,还应包括文化力量,这种力量是软实力,美国在这方面就相当强。中国提软实力并 不一定合适,一是因为我们这方面的力量太弱,比美国、欧洲或者日本都要弱很多,甚至 美国一个局部地区的软实力都比我们强;二是如果我们要推出软实力,可能会招致更多“中 国威胁论”的观点。五四运动时代中国的知识精英常常是把我们的糟粕与西方最核心的价值 相比较,比如拿“抽鸦片烟”、“包小脚”、“蓄妾”、“等级制度”、“封建意识形态”和西方的“理 性”、“自由”、“法制”、“人权”、“个人的尊严”作比较。我们本来就弱,这么一比,我们就没 什么民族自尊可谈了,结果是对自己的传统文化完全丧失信心。
