2011年12月5日,杜维明教授受邀参加第八届新儒学国际会议
2011年12月5-7日,由香港中文大学哲学系,台湾中央大学中国文学系、哲学研究所、儒学研究中心,财团法人东方人文学术基金会·鹅湖月刊社,台湾师范大学国际与侨教学院以及香港中文大学新亚书院、崇基学院联合举办的第九届当代新儒学国际学术会议在香港中文大学召开,来自祖国台湾、香港、大陆两岸三地和美国、韩国、新加坡等海外学者共七十余人,围绕着“当代新儒家与西方哲学”的会议主题,分别从多方面多角度地深入探讨了当代儒学与西方哲学的关系,共发表中英文论文77 篇,其中有不少青年学者。当代新儒家第三代著名代表人物蔡仁厚、刘述先、杜维明分别发表了题为“当代新儒家与西方哲学”、“当代新儒家对西方哲学的回应”、“面向2018 的儒家哲学”的主题讲演。高研院文化中国研究中心主任彭囯翔教授在会议中发表了“牟宗三对唯物辩证法和唯物史观的批判”的论文。 附 杜维明教授的讲稿,此稿为未修改的草稿,有相关意见敬请联系我们,讨论修正。 二十一世纪新儒家的愿景杜维明·北京大学 面对由现代西方启蒙心态导引的西化,现代化,及全球化所带来的错综复杂的人类困境,“何谓人”的重新反思zho“新轴心文明时代”是在这一氛围中出现的。其实,在20世纪的八十年代有先见之明的神学家如Raimon Panikkar和Ewert Cousins就已经提出了这一理念。按照Cousins所编写的《世界精神性》巨作的原定计划,最后一卷“未来的新方向”由Panikkar担任主编就准备集中探讨第二个轴新时代的精神世界。 1989年我出任夏威夷东西文化中心的文化与传播研究所所长, 积极推动的两大研究计划,其中之一即是“轴心文明的宗教对话”(另一计划是“文化中国”)。曾参加这一计划的学者还包括Steve Katz, H. Nasr, Wilfred Cantwell Smith和Huston Smith。除了探讨犹太,基督,伊斯兰,印度,佛,道,儒之间的对话之外,大家建议把原住民的宗教(如神道,夏威夷,也列入研究的范围。因此人类的精神传统都成为反思“启蒙心态”的资源。更值得我们关注的是,早在1960年代Robert Bellah出版“宗教进化”以来“韦伯命题”和雅士柏斯在1949年提出的轴心文明的关系在欧美思想界从比较文明审视现代化的学者都已耳熟能详。如何理解轴心文明也是论辩的焦点。S. N. Eisenstadt 是开展这一论域的核心人物。 美国人文社会科学院的季刊Daedalus曾出版“超越的突破”的专号集中讨论这一议题。哈佛的史华慈(Benjamin Schwartz)是特邀编辑。表面上极有说服力的共识是轴心时代出现了上帝,梵天,罗格斯,天的理念。意味着“存有的断裂”和凡俗世界绝然不同的神圣世界成为人类的“终极关怀。”我坚决反对这种诠释的策略。因为这条思路过分凸现了一神教的特色。入世的儒家便成为“轴心性”不彰显的例外。以色列学者Alkana的策略是从“第二序思考”(second-order thinking)来定义轴心文明。 我比较同意这一提法。终极关怀的对象可以是上帝也可以是人自身。神学,数学是第二序思考,反思自我的修身当然也是第二序思考。可是我觉得仅从认识论切入似乎单薄些。对“轴心性”的理解应有“厚实的描述”(thick description). 我积极参加这一为期多年的论域,和欧美学术高人(不少是师友之间的同事)对话,讨论,辩难,重点是阐释儒家在世界宗教,哲学,及历史中的定位,发展,和可以为世界其他文明提供参照的价值。当然,我深信儒家传统的现代转化可以为文化中国,东亚,亚洲乃至世界提供一条存活和繁荣的道路。犹太,希腊,印度和中国文明同是轴心文明的典范。都可以为新轴心时代做出贡献。根据“宗教演化”的思路,儒家第一期是从原始与远古走进历史(先秦两汉);第二期是从中世纪(the Middle Period)进入前现代 (宋元明清);第三期则是从现代步向未来。不过,Bellah 的新书,《人类演化中的宗教:从旧石器到轴心时代,Religion in Human Evolution: from the Paleolithic to the … Continue reading
