2009年9月6日,杜维明:和衣俊卿对话后序
有缘和衣俊卿教授进行有关西方现代启蒙的对话,我感到有意义也有启发。说“有意义”并 不表示我们的观点相同,其实我们对启蒙的认识和期待颇有分歧,但对话的气氛极好,双方都 遵循“以学心听,以公心辩”的原则,不是一味各自表态,也没有尴尬的争论。说“启发”,我觉得这 次对话激发了几个可以进一步探索的课题。 衣教授的问题都是经过深思熟虑而提出的,并且形成了言之成理、持之有据的书写文字。 我应该建议采取笔谈的方式,先拜读衣教授严谨的推论,再作出回应。不过当时我们都有面对 面沟通的意愿,我也就即兴而谈,没有任何事前的准备,因此谈话的随意性落实到文字上便显 得松散、零乱,与衣教授严谨的书面文字一起发表,有些不协调。能获得《求是学刊》编辑的 同意,为这一对话写篇后序,我很感激。我本应潜心修整自己部分的内容,将谈话的记录转换为 书写文字, 但无奈我抽不出时间,只好向读者及同人致歉了。 多年来我对启蒙进行的反思都集中在“启蒙心态”上。现在就简单地介绍我目前对此议题 的思考及思路。我提出讨论“启蒙心态”,既不是历史意义上的文化运动,也不是哈贝马斯坚持 的“尚未完成的计划”。从 1923 年“科玄论战”以来,启蒙心态的影响如日中天,已成为中国思想 界不言而喻的共识。当今在文化中国广为流行的科学主义即是启蒙心态的突出表现。科学理 性是人类文明的标志,是为全球各地的知识人所认可的核心价值。在中国,过去的“科学救国” 和今天的“科技兴国”都是响亮的口号。理性是感性和知性的提升,科学理性又是最严谨的理性 形式。这是科学主义之所以大行其道的背景。 可是,我认为科学主义是由偏激的物质主义和实证主义铸造而成的意识形态,它与科学 精神大不相同。科学精神是严格的、执著的、专一的,但也是开放的、谦虚的、多元多样的。 科学主义则是闭塞的、专断的和傲慢的。两者形成了鲜明的对比。21 世纪前沿的科学家所 研究的范围无所不包。譬如中国、印度和伊斯兰的科学传统,特别是中医(或韩国所谓的汉医), 都是他们所关注的科研课题。他们所体现的实事求是的精神是虚心好学的。他们知道得越多 越认识到应该知道而不知道乃至永远无法知道的更多;他们也清醒地意识到理性的限制:理 性的光芒所能显现的远非无知之幕所隐蔽的那么多。
