December 11, 2010 Saturday at 7 pm, Professor Tu Weiming, director of the Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Peking University and Professor of Harvard University, made a speech on the global development of Confucius Institutes at the 5th Confucius Institute Conference. Fred Dallmayr is Packey J. Dee Professor in the departments of philosophy and political science at the University of Notre Dame. He met with Professor Tu Weiming at the World Philosophy Day in Moscow, Russia in November of 2009. Since both of the professors are involved in Dialogue of Civilizations, this was an opportunity for them to talk about their mutual interests.[:zh]

Jagdish Chandra Kapur and Tu Weiming met on 11 July, 2010 to talk about challenges of the modern world and dialogue among civilizations. The meeting took place in a hotel room where Mr. Kapur was staying. As shown in the video recording of this meeting, Mr. Kapur, despite his 90+ years of age, was vibrant, sharp, and full of ideas.

Sadly, Jagdish Chandra Kapur passed away on Nov. 19, 2010. Prof. Tu Weiming reflected on Mr. Kapur’s life: “He was a towering figure in reconfiguring the new world order, a major public intellectual in Asia, and a source of inspiration for us. I cherished his willingness to share his broad vision with me. I look forward to an opportunity to continue his seminal work on intercivilizational dialogue in Cultural China.”[:zh]

2010年7月11日 杰格迪•卡普尔先生与杜维明教授共同探讨了当今世界所面临的的挑战以及不同文明之间的对话。两位学者当时是在卡普尔住的酒店房间里会面的。这个视频纪录了两位大师对话的实况。

在视频中，九十一岁高龄的卡普尔仍然充满活力、思想敏锐。但是在这次对话之后不久，卡普尔先生于2010年11月19日逝世了。杜维明教授说：”卡普尔先生是一位致力于重建世界新秩序的杰出人物，也是亚洲的一位重要的公共知识分子，亦是启发我们深思的源泉。我珍视他乐于与我分享其真知灼见的意愿。我希望能有机会在文化中国的研究中继续卡普尔先生所开创的不同文明之间对话的工作。”[:]

Debate on Traditional Culture: Tu Weiming vs. Yuan Weishi杜维明与袁伟时探讨如何怎样对待传统文化

Prof. Tu Wei-ming is the proponent of “third phase of the development of Confucianism,” who brought the modern transformation of Confucian into international context. In addition to freedom, Tu believes, there should be fairness. In addition to rationality, there should be compassion and sympathy. In addition to rule of law, there should be civility. In addition to the dignity of individuals, there should also be social harmony. The core value of the modern Western culture is rooted in the universal values of the West, some of which could also be rooted in the universal values of China and the East.

Yuan Weishi is a retired philosophy professor at Zhong Shan University; he is an expert on China’s modern history. Yuan Weishi believes that benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faith should be built on the foundation of freedom, equality, democracy, and rule of law. Otherwise, these values could only be serving the patriarchal despotism.

Prof. Yuan perceives the “May 4th Movement” as a creative transformation of traditional Chinese, while Prof. Du argues that the “May 4th Movement” has destroyed the fundamentals of Confucianism. To read about the thought-provoking debate between Tu and Yuan in Chinese, click here.

袁伟时是中山大学哲学系退休教授，中国近代史专家。袁伟时认为仁、义、礼、智、信，应建立在自由、平等、民主、法治的基础上。否则，它只能为宗法专制服务。

杜维明是哈佛大学教授。他提出儒学的第三期发展，为儒学的现代转化开拓了国际视野。杜维明认为在自由之外要带进公正。在理性之外，要带进同情、慈悲。在法治之外还有礼让。个人尊严以外，还有社会和谐。现代西方所代表的核心价值是扎根在西方的普适价值，但同样有一些可以是扎根在中国、在东方的普适价值。

Reading Confucius经典会读-从《大学》开始

The first session of Confucian text reading was hosted by Prof. Tu Weiming at the Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Peking University on Saturday, December 4th, 2010.

The first session of Confucian Classics Reading Group was held by Prof. Tu Weiming at the Institute for Advanced Humanistic Studies at Peking University on Saturday, 4th of December.

The participants of this session of Classics Reading Group consist of undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty members, and leaders of various universities and academic departments. Among the participants, there were also many enthusiastic supporters in local community.

This reading session has two main agendas. First, guided by Prof. Tu Weiming, the participants carried out small group discussion after reading the first paragraph of Confucius’ “Great Learning”. Secondly, the participants exchanged ideas on the significance of such group reading and the form of future reading sessions.

The Classics Group Reading sessions will be held regularly in the future. Through continuous exploration and innovative study of Confucian classics, the participants hope to popularize the Chinese classics, to provide opportunities for people of various academic backgrounds to study the classics, and to ignite higher interests in the foundation of one’s own culture. It is also the ongoing effort of the Institute for Advanced Humanities Studies to achieve such a goal.

12月4日上午，高等人文研究院召开了首届经典会读。这期会读由杜维明教授主持。参加第一期会读的有不同学校、院系、年级的研究生、本科生，诸多院系的教授，还有许多社会上友情支持的朋友们。本次会读分两部分，首先，尝试以小型讨论班的形式，研读《大学》首段；其次，由杜维明老师与在座各位导读志愿者及到场师生，细化经典会读的形式，并交流经典汇读的意义。

在大家共同朗读完《大学》之后，先由杜老师介绍讨论的概念和方式，接着大家以“明明德”为核心，展开了有序而激烈的讨论。在场的每一位师生都纷纷表述了自己的理解和疑问。看上去简单的三个字，经讨论意义愈见丰富多元。同时，大家在尊重差异、寻求共识的基础上，针对前面的发言做了回应、补充与质疑，不仅增进了对议题的理解，也加深了彼此间的了解。这场会读既是严肃的学术探讨，又是活跃的思想交流。

接下来, 大家就今后经典会读的形式展开了讨论。发言的人有来自燕京读书会、一耽读书会等老牌读书会创立者；有校方和院方的领导人；有来自学生社团和草根组织的人士；有文史哲相关专业硕士、博士生；有理工科本科生及研究生；还有法律界及教育界的达人。各方人士都对这次“非同寻常”的会读活动提出了创新的意见和建议。

当日下午，高研院召开了经典会读第一期第一次会读的第二场。就“大学”“明德”“亲民”“止于至善”等关键的概念，大家都积极表达出了自己的理解。有很多同学已经有了比较深厚的国学知识基础，他们结合儒学思想的发展和后世儒学家的解读为自己的理解提供了充足的理论支持，还有一些同学的结合自身的生命体验给出了视角独特的阐释。在激烈而有序的讨论中，文本的意义愈加深入而多元，大家也都获得了很多不同的视角和启迪。杜老师还穿插介绍了一些文本解读的方法以及他对于儒家文化的体悟，大家在他的讲述中收获良多。

经典会读活动将稳步发展，希望通过不断地摸索和创新，普及中华经典，让跨越学科及学识界限的人们都有了解经典的途径，让更多的人对自身文化的根基产生兴趣。这是也高等人文研究院目前努力的一个方向。

Tu Weiming Was Elected Titular Member of IIP杜维明於2010年9月获选为国际哲学研究院名誉院士

Tu Weiming (Research Professor and former Harvard-Yenching Professor of Chinese History and Philosophy and of Confucian Studies) was elected titular member of the Institute of International Philosophy (IIP), representing China, by its latest general assembly (held in Paris on September 17).  IIP, the oldest “honor society” in philosophy, has been dedicated to philosophical inquiry as a global joint venture since 1937.

Currently, there are 106 members from 44 countries, including Habermas (Germany), Hintikka (Finland), D. P. Chattopadhyyaya (India), Appiah (Ghana), Imamichi Tomonobu (Japan), Lektorski (Russia), Nasr (Iran), and Searle (USA). Charles Parsons, Hilary Putnam, and Amartya Sen on the Harvard faculty are also members.

杜维明博士在2010年9月间举行的国际哲学研究院会议上获选为该院名誉院士。国际哲学研究院（International Institute of Philosophy， 简称 IIP) 是国际哲学界最高的学术组织，成立於1937年。1938年举行第一次大会，在第二次世界大战期间停止活动。战後在1947、1949年曾举行过两次大会。自1955年来每年举行一次大会，每次大会有一个主题，并出版学术著作。能成为国际哲学研究院委员院士的，都是世界顶级哲学家。

2010年的国际哲学研究院会议于2010年9月15-18日在巴黎隆重举行。这次会议的主题是哲学与世界状况 (Philosophy and the State of the World)。会议开幕式由法国的著名生物医学哲学家和生命伦理学家 Anne Fagot-Largeault 主持，闭幕式由西班牙的 Tomas Caivo 主持。本会生命伦理学专业委员会（筹）副理事长、中国社会科学院邱仁宗研究员出席大会并做了发言。

Tu delivered keynote address on World Philosophy Day杜维明在世界哲学日做主题演讲

The World Philosophy Day 2010 will be held in Iran on 18th November 2010. Tu Weiming, Professor of Philosophy at Peking University, will deliver a keynote address on November 21, 2010 during the three-day event. In his address, Prof. Tu will reflect upon cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue in the context of history as well as today’s world.

World Philosophy Day (WPD) is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) initiative annually observed on the third Thursday of November. It falls on November 18 this year. Last year, the event was held in Moscow.

Director of the Institute of Wisdom and Philosophy of Iran said that theme of international congress of this year’s WPD is “Philosophy: Theory and Practice.”

It is reported that over 50 foreign scholars are going to participate in the event from different countries including the United States, China, India, Austria, Denmark, South Korea, Japan and Norway.
