2006年11月11日,杜维明:儒家“和而不同”的人文精神
《论语》曰: “君子和而不同,小人同而不和”。杜维明以为, “同”与“和”是有区别的, “和” 的对立面是“乱”和“同”。“异”是“和”的必要条件,没有“异”就不能“和”。儒家“和而不同”的人文 精神更多讲的是“求同存异”…… 儒家传统是一个划时代、跨文化,同时也是多学科的一个文化现象。 说它跨时代,因为它是从曲阜的地方文化,逐渐成为中原文化主流。自 11 世纪开始, 又从中原文化的主流逐渐成为东亚文明的体现。它对越南、韩国、日本和海外的东亚社会都 有一定的影响。所以很多人认为儒家传统是代表东亚文明圈的一个思想传统。 说它跨文化,因为它不仅是中国的,也是越南的、日本的,朝鲜的,也可以说是海外东 亚社会的文化。 说它多学科,因为我们可以从历史、文学、宗教、人类学、政治学、社会学和经济学等 各方面来探讨这样一个错综复杂的文化现象。 今天我们想问的是:有没有一条思路、一种理念,可以把这么一个划时代、跨文化、多 学科的复杂现象串起来?也就是说儒家所体现的人文精神,是不是有现代的意义?有全球的 意义?它是不是能够成为今天中华民族的文化认同?另外,面对未来的世界,它可不可能也 成为全球人类的一个参照? 儒学——为己之学 说儒家是一个生命的学问,是身心之学、性命之学,一般没有很大的争议。它一方面讲 修身,一方面也讲人和自然、人和天道能否互相感动的问题,可是我想说儒家是“为己之学”— —希望能够为自己培养创造自己的人格。儒家传统就是一个学做人的传统,那就是一直在学 习做人的过程中展现它的价值。
